Summer 2021 Online Hindi Pedagogy Workshop

DESCRIPTION:

This workshop is specially designed for community school Hindi instructors to develop pedagogical and analytical skills for teaching the Hindi language. The workshop will review grammatical constructions and socio-cultural features of Hindi and expose teachers to pedagogical methodologies and practices. Topics will include the building blocks of Hindi such as phonological, morphological, and syntactic features. We will discuss inflectional and derivational features of nominal and verbal phrases, types of clauses, and syntactic features of simple and complex sentences in a communicative context. We will also explore pedagogical nuances as we prepare instructors to teach Hindi in a language classroom. Workshop activities include interactive discussion sessions and creating age-appropriate lesson plans based on real-life situations and aligned with the National Standards (5Cs).

This three-week workshop will be divided into two sessions to maximize benefits for participants. While SESSION I will help you to improve your pedagogical skills to teach upcoming Hindi summer courses, SESSION II will be a follow-up session to discuss the challenges faced during the summer courses.

TIME AND DURATION OF THE WORKSHOP:

SESSION I: TWO WEEKS (Pre-Summer Session):

17-27 May 2021, 11am – 2pm ET (Monday – Thursday)

SESSION II: ONE WEEK (Follow-Up Session):

16-19 August 2021, 11am – 2pm ET (Monday – Thursday)

Number of Participants: 12

Eligibility for Applicants:

1. Native speaker or near native speaker fluency in Hindi with a bachelor’s degree

2. At least three years of experience teaching Hindi in a community school

3. Preference will be given to those teaching Hindi in a community school in the USA in Summer 2021

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

1. Current curriculum vitae

2. Statement of purpose (200 words)

3. One reference (A Hindi teacher’s name, affiliation, and contact information)

NOTE: There will be no registration fee or other kinds of fees for the selected participants. All the relevant materials for the workshop will be provided to participants.  The workshop is funded by a National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education, awarded to the Columbia South Asia Institute.
