The South Asia Institute presents “The Sharanas and their Vachanas: Basava’s Radical Project,” a talk by Valerian Rodrigues of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

The talk explores the Sharana movement led by Basava, which brought together seekers and devotees from diverse social backgrounds to challenge established social and religious conventions. Drawing on contemporary Kannada scholarship, Rodrigues examines how the movement expressed its vision of social, literary, and spiritual transformation through the distinctive literary form known as the vachana.
