Syantani Chatterjee

Biography

Syantani Chatterjee has a PhD in anthropology from Columbia University. She is MA Director of the Program in South Asia Studies, and appointed as Lecturer in Discipline in the Anthropology Department.  She specializes in South Asia and writes on embodiment, toxicity, belonging, governance, and labor. She is currently working on her book manuscript titled, The New Gateway of India: Toxicity, Belonging, and Governance in Contemporary Mumbai. Her research has appeared in academic journals such as ILWCH, PoLAR and the Cambridge Journal of Anthropology. Previously, she was an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania (2020–2021), and a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Columbia University (2021-2024).
